I was excited when I got the invitation to try the peppermint and lavender essential oils.  I had actually never used any oils before, so I did a little bit of research to see how I could incorporate them into my life.  I am very much into using products that are natural, so this product seemed right up my alley.  When the box arrived at my house the first thing I noticed was the overwhelming powerful scent coming from the box before I even opened it!!  These oils are are extremely concentrated, and on the bottle they suggest diluting it before use.  I would advise this as well.

When doing research on the uses for peppermint I uncovered information stating that peppermint has many healing properties.  The scent of peppermint can help decrease headaches, increase alertness, and help with sinus issues.  There are unlimited uses all over the internet for the use of peppermint oil, but none are actually “proven”.  I used this oil to help myself get over a very unpleasant sinus cold.  Simply smelling the peppermint oil directly out of the bottle was enjoyable.  I could actually smell something after a week of being blocked!!  I took a small amount of oil and mixed it with vaseline.  I rubbed the vaseline on my chest and right under my nose.  It was kind of like making my very own Vicks!  It worked too!!

I used the lavender essential oil for my son in his room.  He has a small crockpot diffuser.  I filled the diffuser up with water and put a few drops of the lavender essential oil in it.  Within 5 minutes his room smelled wonderful!! The scent was so strong that it seeped from his room into the rest of the house.  Lavender has a very calming scent.  My son said that the scent helped keep him calm and he was actually able to relax while doing his homework.  I have not explored any more options for using the lavender oil, but I am looking forward to it in the future.

I would recommend these products to others because I was impressed with the quality.  Not only were the scents very strong, but I also really enjoyed the bottles.  The amount of oil that you get for your purchase is very impressive.  Due to the fact that you only have to use a small amount of the product I foresee these products lasting a very long time.

“When I Grow Up I Want To Be… A Nurse” Book Review

When I grow up I want to be….a Nurse! by Wigu Publishing Book Review.  Part of the When I Grow Up series.

book review

I am a mother of two children.  My daughter is 3 and my son is 10.  I always stress the value of education to my children.  In fact I am currently in school trying to finish my degree for elementary education.  So obviously being an advocate for education I believe that reading to, and with your children, from an early age is extremely important.  Not only is reading to and with your children important to build their vocabulary, and ready them for school, but it is also a wonderful time to bond!  I have been reading books with my 10-year-old son since he was a new-born.  We have developed a special bond surrounding books, and he has developed a great love of reading.  You should see his book-case, its overflowing with various books!  I knew when my daughter was born that I wanted to continue the tradition of reading with her as well.  In fact at her baby shower I requested my friends and family to send books instead of cards!  She also has a bookshelf in her room that is overflowing with books.

Recently an opportunity presented itself where authors began asking me if I would review their books.  Seeing as I am a reviewer, and I am a book lover I decided it was a perfect fit!  I was super excited when Wigu Publishing sent me “When I Grow Up I Want To Be….a Nurse”.  My daughter and I sat down and read it cover to cover and really enjoyed it.

The book is about a little girl named Amber (hey that’s my name too!!).  Amber gets injured while playing soccer and has to go to the hospital because her arm is injured.  The book follows Amber on her journey in the hospital.  We meet different people who Amber interacts with to diagnose, and treat her injured arm.  What I really enjoyed about this book was that we are with Amber every step through her journey.  I think this book would be beneficial in preparing children for an experience such as going to the hospital or getting a cast.  It explains thoroughly what the hospital workers were doing to Amber, and why they were doing it.

I also really enjoyed that there were pages throughout the book that explained things in detail. These pages give definitions or in-depth explanations for things that children might not understand.  There is an explanation page for Nurse, The Emergency Room, Vitals, and a few other kinds of nurses.  My daughter being 3 years old was a little too young to understand the definitions.  She was mainly focused on the story.

The artwork in the book immediately caught my attention.  The illustrations of Amber and her friends were vibrantly colored and drawn.  The background for each illustration was a real photograph.  It was a very neat contrast to see a cartoon illustration over a real photograph.  We really enjoyed how fun it was to see the different scenery in the story.

I would totally recommend picking up this book for your child.  It is informative and entertaining.  Wagu Publishing actually has an entire line of When I Grow Up books that you can get for your child.  You can order this book through Amazon.com.

I received a $10.00 off coupon to get a bottle of William Lawson’s Super Spiced Whiskey and try it out!  I did have a little trouble finding the liquor in a store near me, but I did finally locate it.  When I purchased the whiskey the first thing I noticed was the bottle.  I loved the way that it looked.  (Yes I do judge the book by the cover lol)

When I got it home I couldn’t wait to try it because I am a whiskey girl!  When I do drink, whiskey is my drink of choice.  I had read other reviews of this product, and from the name I had assumed that it would be smooth and not strong-tasting.  I opened the bottle and took a big whiff and it was STRONG smelling!  Whiskey usually is, so I didn’t let that deter me.  I decided the best way to test out the quality of the liquor and compare it to my favorite brand was to try it straight up on the rocks.   I did a shot of the William Lawson’s Super Spiced Whiskey in my kitchen and WHOA it was STRONG!  A little too strong for me  actually.  So I decided to try to mix the liquor with some soda.  For my first drink I mixed the whiskey with Dr. Pepper.  I made the drink a little too strong, but I drank it anyway.  By the end of the glass it was tasting pretty good.  For my second drink I mixed the whiskey with Wild Cherry Pepsi.  The drink tasted pretty darn good!  By the end of my second drink I had a good buzz going on.

I would recommend trying William Lawson’s Super Spiced Whiskey.  The price is cheaper than the more well-known brands but the taste is actually better.

I am a self titled foodie meaning I LOVE FOOD! Since I’ve became vegetarian I have really learned to embrace fresh food!  During the summer last year I started to go to a lot of farmers markets checking out what local companies had to offer.  One day I came across a stand for Juanita’s Fresh Salsa and Chips.  After chatting with the owner for a few minutes I decided to indulge myself with a sample he had on the table.  It was delicious!

Juanita’s Salsa and Chips has two types of salsa Hot and Mild.  I am usually not a hot flavored person, but I found that the hot was tolerable for me, and I really liked the flavor.  My children really loved the mild version.  My son says this is his favorite salsa he has ever had!  My whole family also really loved the chips.  The chips were light, and not greasy at all.  They also had just the perfect amount of salt on them.

My favorite thing about the salsa is the consistency.  I hate salsa that is thick and chunky.  Usually when I am eating salsa that is thick I just dip into the watery part and eat the chip to get the flavor of the salsa.  When I was eating Juanita’s Salsa it was all the same consistency.  I loved it like that.  Being chopped fine helped all the flavors to merge together.

Juanita’s Salsa and Chips is a company based out of River Rouge Michigan.  Local to me in the “Downriver” area as we like to call it. I love that this company is local and fresh!  The owner travels to many farmers markets during the summer months and also appears at a few during the winter months.  You can see get updates to where Juanita’s will be appearing on their Facebook page, along with a list of what stores you can buy it at.  Lucky for me there is a store less than 10 minutes away from my house where I can purchase it!
